Who?
Ten years ago I (the Grinning
Ape) decided to produce the greatest
album ever, an album so shocking that it would put an end
to all other music the day it was released. Why? I don't
know. Ten years of false starts, cheap synths, indie bands,
never quite learning the bass guitar, 4-track ambience, one
student film soundtrack comission and a whole slew of failures
comes the album "The Greatest
Ape".
This isn't the greatest album ever made. But it's one step
closer to that day when, once and for all, we can say "That's it, all over, thanks everyone, you can stop now." I feel this album (such as it is) represents a culmination of all my years battering away at the very fringes of the outer limts of the far flung reaches of underground, unloved music. For that reason I half recollect here my magical path through the World of Music that has led me to this giddy height.
Music History
1990: Sleepman (band, style: Avant
garde Industrial cabaret, instrument:bass, trivia: the drummer
is now in quite a good band but I can't, at this precise
moment, remember the name)
1990: Visions of Sugarplums (band,
style:Industrial baggy, instrument: bass, trivia: one member
would go on to become a Hari Krisna)
1990: Walking Mind (band,
style: Doors influenced prog-baggy, instrument: bass, trivia:
all the other members of the band have gone on to have varying
degress of fame and success in music, except me)
1991: The
Impossibles (band, style: Wings influenced indie, instrument:
bass, trivia: Nick would later go on to partially contribute
to my nervous breakdown, but I don't hate him like he seems
to think I do)
1992: HOT (band, style: Post-Pop
Punk, instrument:bass, trivia: nothing was trivial about
HOT)
1994: D & G Hardware (band,
style: Electronic music, instrument:computer, trivia: G's
tracks are really good whilst D's are notable by their awfulness)
1996: The Steamers
(band, style: Pop music, instrument:bass, trivia: Alan Mcgee
didn't actually throw the demo tape away, he just gave it
to someone else, but I only found that out AFTER I'd drunkenly
insulted her)
1998: Golden Jackal (band, style:
Billy Childish obsessed Japanese punk, instrument:bass /
computer, trivia: the band started when, after getting in
contact through the NME classified page, two diminutive Japanese
girls turned up at the door with a large plastic bag containing
24 cans of lager)
1999: Automaton (band, style:
Apocalyptic robot sermons, instrument: computer, trivia:
The band concept was inspired by a road sign in Brighton
that simply said "Information".
The next 48 hours featured heavily the phrase "I need
to glean information" said in a popmpous robot voice)
2005: Grinning Ape (solo, style: Primitive techno with pig sty
atmospherics, instrument:computer, trivia: The name came
from a list I made of fictitous artists and then someone
else picked up on it and it kind of stuck, it felt like a
prophecy that must be fulfilled)
Discography
1996-2005
A series of unreleased cassettes and CD-Rs in editions of
one, just for me, that might have a one or two good tracks
each but then a whole lot of guff.
Also there's a website
simply bursting at the seams full of Grinning Ape demos,
half hearted tunes and sonic sketches at www.grinningape.com

"very bleepy focused ambience and
rather special, not surprising that the ape involved declared that this
album (10 years in the making !) would become the greatest album ever made, make your own minds up... it could be a close call."
